Russell has twenty years' teaching experience in Further and Higher Education. He has taught both full- and part-time students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has substantial experience of teaching adults through courses run by the Workers' Education Association and various university Departments of Lifelong Learning. As a member of the Higher Education Academy Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Group (HLST), Russell will be facilitating a workshop at the HLST 2010 Conference on Olympic Legacy issues.
He has also taught in a range of institutions in Germany (Technical University Braunschweig, Harz Hochschule, Wenigerode), the United States (North Western University, Chicago) Austria,(The University of Applied Sciences, Kufstein) and Poland (Jagellonian University, Krakow). He is currently an Associate Lecturer at Southampton Solent University.
During his lecturing career, he has specialized in the Politics and History of Sport, Sport and Media, Sport and National Identity and the Political Economy of Sport as well as British and European Union Politics (the focus of his PhD) and Genocide Studies.
As co-founder of the Centre for Humanities at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC), Russell ensured that all UWIC humanities undergraduates were able to study sport through a range of modules which he designed and implemented. This enabled a wide range of UK, European and overseas students to gain an appreciation of the significance of sport to daily life and its impact on global society.
Russell has also been part of review and validation teams for new and exisiting degree programmes in academic departments offering humanities, sport and leisure courses.
