He is a regular reviewer of new titles in the field of Sport Politics, Sport Sociology, Sport History and Sport Writing, for Iddrotisforum, the Nordic Sports Science Forum, and  journals including Sport History, Sport and Society and the Canadian Journal of Leisure Studies. He has also commented on texts exploring the issues surrounding Britain’s complicated history of relations with the European Union.

Russell also acts as an external referee for publishers considering both articles and new volumes for publication.
